Join the Team:
Every summer, Camp Woodhaven employs over 60 staff to run our summer program. Working
at Camp Woodhaven is so much fun, that over 60% of our staff come back to work at camp the
next summer. A high retention rate with staff is very important to us, because it maintains a high
level of experience and the traditions of Camp Woodhaven are passed on from year to year
to each generation of campers. Our expectations for staff are very high. We hire many college
students who are studying to be school teachers, art teachers and special education teachers.
Working with children each summer builds their professional skills and looks great on their
resume once they graduate from College.
How to Get Hired at Camp Woodhaven?
First, apply on-line with our easy staff application. Step two will be a staff interview. We will hire most of our staff by June 1st.
It’s all about you! The secret to running a great camp is great staff. It’s all about bringing together a team of diverse people with all kinds of creative talents and skills who are smart and full of energy and enthusiasm. We are very interested in your life experiences and special talents that you can bring to the team. These could be anything from music, theatre, sports, or science. When you are completing the staff application please tell us as much about you, your interests and what unique talents or experiences you can add to the team. We have positions available as counselors, program specialists, lifeguards, assistant directors, and creative directors like our chapel worship leaders.
Camp is a little like running a theatre company that will perform a production for a limited amount of time. Pre-camp all of the staff will meet for special training, team building in preparation for the role they will perform as a member of the camp staff. Our pre-camp staff training consists of on-line video training with a national camping expert. We also have two weekends of on-site staff training and CPR and First Aid certification for all staff. All of the staff training and meetings are mandatory.
All staff are required to work every day for all nine weeks unless pre-arranged exceptions are made with the camp director prior to signing your employment contract.
At Camp Woodhaven we have an Executive Director, a Camp Director and three Assistant Directors. The Assistant Directors report to the Camp Director and oversee three areas, Electives, Specialists, and Group Staff. For Specialists, we will hire an Arts & Crafts Specialist, Nature Specialist, Sports Specialist, Adventure Specialist, Drama Specialist, and Archery Specialist and a Pool Director with three lifeguards. For Group Staff, we hire Junior Counselors, Senior Counselors and CORE Leaders. CORE stands for Coaching, Organizing, Relating and Encouraging. Each CORE Leader assists a group of counselors in their daily activities. Junior Counselors must be a minimum of 16 years old; Senior Counselors must be a minimum of 18 years old. CORE Leaders are over 21 years old. Our camper to counselor ratio is 6:1 for 5/6 year-olds, 8:1 for 7/8 year-olds, 10:1 for 9/10 year-olds and 12:1 for 11/12 year olds. Each counselor has a pod of campers and travels together in larger groups of counselors with children of the same age group with their respective CORE Leader. Each counselor is personally responsible for his or her 6 to 12 children every day for the entire week. Each counselor has a Leader in Training, a 13-15 year-old who is assigned to the group to help with activities during the day. Supporting the counselors are the CORE Leaders, Specialists, and administration that provide the structure and program activities throughout the day.
Sincerely,

George & Paula DeTellis
Camp Directors
