Staff Positions:

Senior Counselor - 18 Years and Older

  • Teach and model Godly characteristics to campers & staff at all times
  • Carry out and enforce established rules and safety regulations of camp
  • Be responsible for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well being of five to ten campers throughout each week, and help maintain standards that lead to a quality program
  • Take attendance and a lunch count each morning. MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS A LUNCH!!
  • Be an active participant-If you are engaged, your camper will be engaged! If you need a breather, cheer from the sidelines.
  • Strongly encourage children to participate. Do not offer alternate activities for specialist areas.
  • Work with the campers on their Bible Memory verses
  • Clean up and return equipment your group has used for an activity
  • Hand out all art projects, “lost and found, “ and camp mail from group bin at PM flag
  • Keep children from talking during the flag ceremony and encourage participation during the assembly time. Keep your campers sitting close to the flag pole in your assigned zone.
  • Enforce the rule of three: Any time a camper needs to go to the bathroom or the nurse, they must be accompanied by another camper and staff member.
  • Go to your CORE leader for guidance on discipline issues
  • Eat lunch at the assigned lunch location and dispose of all lunch trash in the dumpster
  • Stay with your campers till they are through the pool dressing room. Once they are through the door, rotate with other staff to create three 15 minute blocks:
    • 15 minutes sitting by the pool edge & scanning the pool surface- no talking during this time
    • 15 minutes sitting close to the pool doors and watching for campers who need to use the restroom. Always go into the pool locker room in groups of three to protect yourself. Do not allow a camper to go into the room with supervision.
    • 15 minutes supervising the pool deck/picnic tables
  • Participate in Opening and Closing assemblies by leading your campers in the flag ceremony and leading group singing once a week
  • Before leaving camp for the day, check to make sure all trash has been picked up from your fence post (have the campers do this for you before they leave your area) and dispose of the trash in the Trading Post trash cans. Bring lost and found to the chapel.
  • Assist with car line dismissal. Have your campers stay close by your side without talking so that they can hear if their name is called. If all of the campers from your group have been picked up, help another group or clean up trash. No one can leave until all campers have been picked up (with the exception of someone who is running late).

Adventure Specialist

Overview: Specifically addresses community and teamwork. Activities will include, promote and insure inclusion of all participants in problem solving, age appropriate physical challenges, exploration of the site and use of team building exercises and equipment.

Mission:
To present opportunities for community building and involvement in sharing of responsibilities and decision-making based on the age and physical abilities of the participants.

  • Provide team-building program and try to tie your specialist programming into the theme for the week using an adventure activity in conjunction with imagination to bridge the activity.
  • Teach, model, and monitor proper use of adventure equipment
  • Open car doors in the AM at 8:30 sharp.
  • Put away all adventure equipment at the end of the day into the archery/adventure shed
  • Keep the shed organized and clean
  • Assist with Friday Festival prep when needed
  • Before leaving camp for the day, check to make sure all trash has been picked up from your adventure area (have the campers do this for you before they leave your area) and dispose of the trash in the dumpster
  • Attend Monday morning specialist meeting
  • Attend Thursday Specialist lunch and bring shopping list for the following week
  • Submit purchase requests one week in advance or be prepared to shop for the item using petty cash funds
  • Eat lunch with the group assigned to you

Archery Specialist (Monday-Thursday position)

Overview: Specifically addresses personal skill. Activities will include specific emphasis on safety, equipment care and maintenance, history, and skill development.

Mission:
To present personal, physical and mental challenges and establish a discipline that perpetuates each individual participant’s personal responsibility for all participants’ safety and well-being, regardless of age and ability of campers. (This program component is offered only to campers age 7 and up.)

  • Return the water cooler to the Dining Hall

Arts & Crafts Specialist

Overview: Specifically addresses personal artistic involvement. Activities will promote and insure inclusion of all participants in artistic interpretation, experimentation with various recyclable materials, fine motor activities and tactile experiences.

Mission: To present challenges to enable successful artistic enrichment based on the aptitude and age of the child.

  • Keep A/C area swept and organized

Campcraft Specialist

Overview: Specifically addresses traditional wilderness and survival skills and camping arts. Activities will include, promote and insure inclusion of all participants in learning about techniques and best practices for making shelters, fire safety, orienteering and navigation, plant identification, geocaching, wilderness preservation, and leathercraft.

Mission: To present skills and knowledge regarding camping and wilderness survival in a “hands on” manner that connects children to their outdoor environment.

  • Teach and model Godly characteristics to campers & staff at all times
  • Carry out and enforce established rules and safety regulations of camp
  • Provide engaging camping arts program and try to tie your specialist programming into the theme for the week using a campcraft activity in conjunction with imagination to bridge the activity.

  • Put away all campcraft equipment at the end of the day
  • Keep campcraft materials organized and clean

Overview: Provides character building program by using Bible verses or stories to bring each lesson to life. Incorporate crafts, skits, and games to demonstrate the desired character trait.

Mission: To present the teachings of the Bible in a manner that will encourage and enable each child carry these teachings into their daily lives, beyond camp time.

Mission: To give campers the ability to explore different dance and movement genres as a fun exercise alternative.

Age appropriate activities will include, promote and insure inclusion of all participants in experiences with costuming and make-up, adaptation of props, interpretation, mime and improvisation.

Mission: To provide every child with the opportunity to practice on stage activities in a supportive, fun and non-competitive environment in order to strengthen each child’s confidence in themselves and love for the dramatic arts.

Overview: Works in conjunction with the character building specialist to introduce music, both vocal and instrumental, that ties in with the lesson for the week and makes the lessons or verses more memorable.

Mission: To present the character building lessons and verses through songs and to expose children to different instruments in order to encourage them to play them outside of camp. Allow some children to use these gifts by participating with leading music for chapel and/or flag ceremonies.

Nature Specialist

Overview: Specifically addresses ecology education, policies and practices as well as stewardship for our natural world. Activities will include, promote and insure inclusion of all participants in experiences with nature experiments and knowledge and will include information regarding poisonous plants, safe hiking, forest management and exposure to the flora and fauna of Camp Woodhaven’s site.

Mission: To educate our campers as to the wonder of the beauty of and the responsibility for the natural world that surrounds us.

Overview: Specifically addresses good sportsmanship and continually promotes and recognizes individual value as well as team effort. Activities will include, promote and insure inclusion of all participants in experiencing age appropriate gross motor and fine motor activities- i.e. field games and yard games played with teams or as individuals. Some activities will be competitive and some non-competitive as in practice drills.

Mission: To always present a field of play, every day, in every game, where each child feels accepted and empowered, regardless of age and ability, and each individual has the chance to experience success in some way (even if it is to be a good loser).

  • Perform Swim tests on Monday and Wednesday
  • Rotate guard shifts according to pool manual policies in order to remain alert and energized
  • Teach, model, and monitor proper use of pool equipment and supplies
  • Put away all pool equipment at the end of the day

  • Have extended day campers pick up all toys they used in the chapel area
  • Eat lunch with the group assigned to you, except on Thursdays when you have lunch with specialists

Office Assistant

Lunch Coordinator

  • Count lunch tickets in the AM for a lunch count
  • Place pizza order by 10:00AM
  • Prepares water coolers for field locations
  • Prepare sandwiches
  • Fill lunch orders in bags
  • Maintain a shopping list for the lunch food
  • Keeps the kitchen clean and disinfected
  • Handle lunch issues for counselors
  • Wash lunch trays and clean and replenish condiment bags for next day
  • Cut watermelon and make lemonade for Thursday Overday
  • Assist with Trading Post sales during the busy hours after lunch has been served.

Assistant Director - 21 Years or Older

  • Teach and model Godly characteristics to campers & staff at all times
  • Carry out and enforce established rules and safety regulations of camp
  • Scan for cell phone use, roaming/unsupervised campers, undocumented visitors, unaccompanied children using the restroom at all times
  • Serve as the Parent Liaison which includes handling phone calls where parents are checking on their children and making phone calls about discipline issues
  • Take over discipline issues that are severe in nature or that cannot be resolved by the group staff or CORE leaders
  • Assist CORE leaders with staff issues and report the need for group changes to Director
  • If specialist plans are not sufficient, assist them in researching and implementing programming ideas

  • Make sure all groups are applying sunscreen, taking bathroom breaks and Trading Post visits at the scheduled time
  • Read the group staff dailies and make sure that the director knows about any notable situations
  • Signal to group staff when to start Opening and Closing Flag Ceremonies- 8:55 AM & 4:05 PM.

LIT Director - 21 Years or Older

  • Teach and model Godly characteristics to campers & staff at all times
  • Carry out and enforce established rules and safety regulations of camp
  • Be responsible for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well being of 30 LIT/CITs throughout each week, and help maintain standards that lead to a quality program
  • Take attendance and a lunch count each morning. MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS A LUNCH!!
  • Teach educational lessons for each LIT level
  • Assign LITs to groups
  • Observe LITs in group setting by walking around and observing group interaction
  • Give staff and specialists feedback as needed
  • Have group staff fill out a weekly review on the LIT participant
  • Write your own review and outline goals for LITs/CITs. Meet with them at least four times to give this feedback (two times for Intro to LITs).
  • Meet once a week for lunch with the leadership team on Tuesday
  • Submit purchase requests one week in advance or be prepared to shop for the item using petty cash funds
  • Oversee bus arrivals and departures, Organize LITs/CITs to help campers find their groups
  • Submit your daily report before leaving camp.

POOL Director/PM Extended Day

CORE Leader (Coaching-Organizing-Relating-Encouraging) - 21 Years Old

  • Teach and model Godly characteristics to campers & staff at all times
  • Carry out and enforce established rules and safety regulations of camp
  • Scan for cell phone use, roaming/unsupervised campers, undocumented visitors, and unaccompanied children using the restroom at all times
  • Join the activities of groups in your age bracket on a rotating basis throughout the day. “Play” with every group during the day, so you can really observe how things are going.
  • Support and assist group staff with difficult discipline issues
  • Record serious problems or repetitive discipline issues on incident report forms and submit to the Assistant Director
  • Establish and maintain behavior plans for struggling children
  • Support group staff by :
    • Coaching by giving feedback and direction
    • helping to Organize needed supplies or program ideas
    • affirming the relationships between the counselors in each group as they work as a team, help them work through Relational issues with their peers
    • Encouraging them when they are struggling and praising them when they are doing a great job
  • Communicate with the CORE leaders from other age groups if you see inappropriate behavior from someone under their supervision. If that CORE leader is not available or if the problem is serious, please deal with the issue and then report the incident directly to an Assistant Director or the Camp Director
  • Plan Friday Festivals

  • Meet with other CORE leaders and the Assistant Directors every Wednesday for lunch to plan and address any issues
  • Eat lunch with the groups assigned to you on a rotating basis every other lunch period.
  • Take a 15 minute break during the day, but not during lunch time.
  • Assist with car line dismissal. No one can leave until all campers have been picked up (with the exception of someone who is running late).
  • Before leaving camp for the day, check to make sure group staff picked up trash and “lost and found” from their fencepost area. Also, make sure they are distributing the items from their group tub at the end of the day. Bring lost and found to the chapel and empty tubs on Fridays.
  • Make sure your staff and campers are participating properly in assemblies ex. Not talking during the flag ceremony, etc.
